A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire
Jennifer L. Armentrout
"He was both the villain and the hero, the monster and the monster - slayer. "
Where do I begin? Honestly, I don’t know. When I read From Blood in Ash back in March, I thought it was my favorite book this year, and I also know I sound like an broken record, when I repeat over and over again how shocked but at the same time amazed I was, but this book really blowed my mind. A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire totally topped it. Knowing nearly all of Jennifer’s books, I should have expected it but somehow I was still speechless.
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire is book two of the Blood and Ash Series and it follows the events of the first book.
After the revelation that Hawke is the dangerous Prince Casteel, whom everyone warned Poppy about, and his announcement that he’s going to marry her, the only thing she can think about is escaping. But unfortunately for her, Casteel already expected her plans and stops her. Poppy suffers from his betrayal, but danger lurks everywhere and his first priority is her safety. Even though I wasn’t sure wether I like him or not at the first half of the book, I was so amazed by how caring he was and the more I read about him or the development of their relationship, the more I began to like him again. It was obvious that he truly fell in love with her, which warms my heart because Poppy deserves everything, but I wasn’t able to forgive and forget.
Although I wasn’t a big of a fan of him, I enjoyed there scenes, especially their banter .
Both the character and realationship developments where awesome. The longer I read, the more the characters grew on me and with some of them I fell deeply in love with, for example Kieran.
Can we please talk about Kieran? I think we haven’t talked enough about him. Even if he was on the wrong side and we haven’t read much about him in FBAA I liked him so much and my feelings grow stronger and stronger for him in AKOFAF with every word I read about him. Especially his scenes with Poppy where my favorite parts of that book, although I’m totally in for Poppy and Casteel, but I think that she needs a friend or a person she can talk with and Kieran is that one.
I loved his friendship with Poppy, I totally adored them together. I had so much fun reading there development and when he named her Poppy instead of Penellaphe I had tears in my eyes.
God, I really love him and I don’t think I can handle it if something happens to him.
Another thing I really liked, was the focus on side characters. It was so interesting to get to know more people especially Kieran’s sister Netta or Alastir or all the other people Casteel and Kieran trusted and I’m so excited to read more about them in the next books.
All in all it was such a great book and is, of course, one of my favorites. I loved all of it, the sarcasm, the heartbreaking moments, the moments that made me laugh out loud and of course I loved the moments that left my mouth falling to the floor and my heart beating so fast that I thought it might spring out of my chest the next second.
And I couldn’t be more excited for the third book.
